Join our new Book Club!
Enhancing literacy skills is one of Girl Scouts' primary objectives. Girl Scouts knows that literacy in and of itself pertains to more than simply the ability to read. Literacy also encompasses writing, communicating with others, and processing ideas—all of which impact a girl’s success.
Through this innovative book club program, reading is emphasized as a joyous and pleasurable activity that can help girls discover who they are and who they want to be. It also introduces them to all the different cultures and peoples that make up the world community. With strong reading, writing and communication skills, girls are better able to set goals, plan their futures, and achieve their dreams.
We have modeled our new program on one initiated by the Sajuaro Girl Scout Council of Tucson, Arizona. Girls in our area will have the opportunity to join the Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama Book Club with two books featured each quarter.
Here’s how it works:
- Participants will read the book, which can be purchased or checked out of a public library.
- Fill out the packet of activities related to the book and return the completed packet to the Girl Scout office to join the club and receive a patch.
Each patch costs $.75 and will add another segment to the “bookworm,” pictured above.

- Princess Academy – From acclaimed author Shannon Hale comes a richly imagined novel about would-be princesses and the destiny of one small but determined girl.
- Misty of Chincoteague – Marguerite Henry’s classic horse story has charmed readers for over 50 years.
- True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle – From acclaimed author Avi comes the thrilling tale of a
13-year-old girl’s breathtaking adventures on the high seas.
- Mr. Popper’s Penguins – A classic of American humor by Richard and Florence Atwater, this is the story of a gentle housepainter and his high-stepping penguins.
- Charlotte's Web – This belongs to a special class of literature: a children's book which has just as much to offer to older teen and adult readers. E.B. White's wonderful story is superbly complemented by the charming illustrations of Garth Williams.
- the good good pig: the extraordinary life of Christopher Hogwood – When author Sy Montgomery brought home the sickliest runt of the pig litter as a pet, she never imagined how much he would grow and enrich the lives of all those who came in contact with him.
